The Palmolive Building Fire Sprinkler Retrofit
Alliance Fire Protection is scheduled to conduct a fire sprinkler system retrofit of the Palmolive
Building, a 38 floor landmark building located on North Michigan Ave. in Chicago, Illinois.
The Palmolive Building was built in 1927 for one of the world's leading soap manufacturers. It is
one of the country's premier Art Deco-style skyscrapers. The building has many distinct tiers, each
set back from the one below resulting in a shape like a wedding cake. Art Deco-style skyscrapers were
influenced by municipal zoning laws, which forced buildings to reduce their shadows at street level,
and by the dramatic renderings of New York architect Hugh Ferris.
A navigational beacon operated atop the building from 1930-1981. It was known as the Playboy
Building from 1965 to 1989 when it served as headquarters for Playboy magazine.
The Palmolive Building is being converted to Luxury condominiums with some upscale retail shops
located on the first three floors.
Alliance Fire Protection will be installing over 3,600 fire sprinklers. New fire pumps will also
be installed. Construction is currently under way.
